Pregnancy and birth draw on reserves that take real food to rebuild. Breastfeeding then raises your needs for iodine, vitamin C, zinc and B12 above where they sat during pregnancy, and keeps them there for as long as you are feeding.
Everything here is made or derived from from wholefoods rather than synthesised nutrients, made in Australia, and third-party tested. Every amount is published per serve, so you can check it against the NHMRC values for breastfeeding women.
Not sure where to start?
Read our guide to choosing a postpartum supplement.
It takes five minutes and it works for any brand, not just ours.
There is no single right answer, because it depends on what you are short of. These are a couple of questions worth settling first.
Have you had your bloods done?
Tiredness after birth can come from low iron, a thyroid change, broken sleep or low mood. They feel almost identical. Ask your GP for iron studies including ferritin, plus TSH and free T4. Ferritin matters because the other iron test can look normal while your stores are empty. A thyroid condition called postpartum thyroiditis affects about one in 20 women in the first year after birth.
Are you breastfeeding?
It changes what you need. Compared with a woman who is neither pregnant nor breastfeeding, the NHMRC recommends 80% more iodine, 89% more vitamin C, 50% more zinc and 46% more protein while lactating. Iron and folate go the other way and drop. A pregnancy multivitamin carried over after birth will not match that pattern.
Mothers Replenishment - Organic postpartum supplement powder, 7 g serve.
Contains wholefood sources of Iron, Vitamins A, C, B12 and iodine, from organic beef liver, amla, acerola and kelp.
Nourishing Energy - Wholefood iron capsules, 4 per serve.
Good source of iron, 10.9 mg per serve as haem iron from organic grass-fed and finished beef liver and spleen.
Pure Collagen Peptides Powder - Hydorlise collagen, 10 g serve.
Type I and III collagen and protein, from grass-fed and finished bovine collagen.
Haem iron, which comes from animal foods, is absorbed at roughly 22%.
Non-haem iron, from plants and most iron tablets, is absorbed at roughly 4%.
That is about a fivefold difference, which is why the milligram figure on a label only tells you half the story.
Percentages on Australian food labels are measured against values written in 1991. Food Standards Australia New Zealand says so openly and is working on updating them. Current NHMRC advice dates from 2006. For iron the gap is wide: the labelling figure is 12 mg while the current recommendation for women aged 19 to 50 is 18 mg.
So a product can lawfully print a large percentage that means less than it looks. We publish milligrams and micrograms per serve so you can do the comparison yourself.
